Video Game Chat Rooms, The World's Septic Tank
One of my favorite things happened yesterday. I got into a fight with an eleven year old in a Warcraft game. A player, we will call him "Purple" because thats what color he was, was totally dominating this game. He had 29 kills and 1 death, which is a very good record for this particular game. Another player "Teal" began getting upset because purple kept killing him again and again. So he started calling him names, insulting him, telling him how he has no life and he obviously spends all of his waking hours playing this game because that's the only way he could be so good. Teal said that if he wasn't so busy getting head from chicks, he could be as good as purple too. But he has a social life to deal with so he can't spend all his time practicing playing wacraft. He said that purple will obviously never get laid, because he hasn't been out of his room in years and he will die alone because he can't do anything but play Warcraft. Purple said a few things back, but because this kind of illogical bullshit is exactly what sets me off. I felt it was my moral obligation to educate teal on what he was actually saying. I knew before I started that there would be no reaching this child. But in my heart I was hoping there was another one "like him" in this game simply watching the chatlog, and he would heed my words, and stop himself before getting into a similar fit in a different game.
I say to teal. Teal it isn't very polite to assume such absurd things about a person you don't know any better than him being a better warcraft player than you. You are actually going about it backwards. As a matter of fact, since you only have one point of comparison: warcraft, than in this limited universe you can only assume that purple is actually a better human being than you in every way. For all you know, he spends no more time than you playing warcraft, yet somehow he is 29-1, and you are 4-19. Instead of fabricating a scenario in which you have some sort of edge of him, like a well developed social life (which I doubt) you should be looking up to him and taking notes. Because compared to you, using his skills at warcraft as the point of reference, he is Gary Kasparov and you are Helen Keller. So please stop making a fool of yourself, because no one in this game cares how hot your girl friend is. All we care about is the scoreboard, and it's not looking very good for you.
This is just one of many similar spats I have had with people online. But if I have anymore that are as well developed as this one, I will be sure to share them with you.

Hey I wanted to let you know that I was the Teal guy and you're a homo who likes sex with other men and..... ok ok I'm just kidding.
I'm usually the Purple guy in games I play. In Call of Duty 2, which is a game that keeps score that I primarily play, I typically win the round or come in 2nd. People usually spout off a thing or two against me telling me similar things about me having no life and blah blah blah. I do however work 10 hours per day and I have 2 kids. I might play video games for a grand total of 4 hours per week. I play for fun. Not for some idiotic reason that others seem to play like for face or just simply to prove who is a better person. The best example of a game where people play and are good and shove it in people's faces as though being better at the game means they are superhuman or are going to have more financial success than those they beat is Halo 2 on XBOX Live. I wonder if these people who are good at Halo 2 actually go to clubs and try to pick up chicks with that "Hey baby...I'm a level 42 in Halo2..you konw you want me." I enjoy the game. But when I have to listen to some 10 year old tell me how great they are and how much I suck because they beat me, it gets a little old.
Personally if I were in a game where I was doing great and someone started verbally attacking me, and someone like you spoke up and in manner of defense for me, I would get irritated at you more than the guy attacking me. There are alot of lame people on the internet. At first it bothered me. Years later, I just don't care anymore.
When someone is better than me at a game and they beat my score, I don't talk about it much. But if they start talking about how great they are and how bad I suck because they beat me, I admit to being a noob. I'm like "yeah I've played this game for a total of 30 minutes in my life and somehow you still managed to beat me...congratulations..you just defeated a noob. Does that make you feel good or wouldn't you take more pride in beating someone who considers themselves a pro in this game?"
Also wanted to let you know that you might like to check out my blog. I talk about alot of the same kind of stuff that you talk about.
